English as a Second Language

ESL classes begin mid to late August and continue through the end of May each year. The classes are located at Green Valley School in Rescue or Schnell School in Placerville.  Classes are free and structured so students can register or exit at any time during the year. New students are assessed to determine their skill level as basic, intermediate or advanced. Green Valley and Schnell classes may vary slightly based on the needs of the students but generally speaking the focus of the work at each level is similar. At the basic level students work on alphabet recognition, building vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking and some writing skills; while the intermediate level work focuses on grammar skills and learning vocabulary in writing, reading and conversation. The advanced level works to fine-tune grammar, reading, using more involved conversation and writing short essays.
